2Kings18:4-5 He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the grooves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and called it Nehushtan... He trusted in the LORD God of Israel;
Prior to the time Hezekiah was enthroned, the Israelites were worshipping the brasen serpent that Moses made in the wilderness and they called it 'Nehushtan', God told Moses to make that serpent and hang it so that whoever looks would live. The serpent that was hung is believed to be symbolic of the death of Christ on the cross for the salvation of man-kind.
God only gave Moses that instruction for that hour, it wasn't meant to be a generational instruction but the people of God decided to 'god' the object of instruction. That's what some believers are doing today. There are believers who have 'god' the anointing oil and they even have tags on each anointing oil in their houses. They have separated one for healing, vengeance, deliverance, etc.
When men begin to take a past instruction either given to them or a man of God as a formula to live by, it may result into error. The israelites thought they were always to worship that serpent. That God gave a preacher an instruction to pray on water for the sick doesn't mean it has become a one-fits-all formula for all time.
Don't make a god out of a man nor certain practices. God wants your focus to be on him alone.
Father, I receive grace to focus on you and not on man-made practices in Jesus name.
