Matthew 23:13- But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
While in school, I remember a particular sister that I assumed was in a relationship with a brother because they were always together. But surprisingly, after awhile, the brother got engaged to another sister. Of course, I thought it to be unfair for the brother to do such a thing to her; but I later discovered that it was unconsciously intentional on the part of that sister by allowing the brother to spread a canopy around her that chased other prospective suitors away.
Such a scenario is called a 'canopy ministry'. It is a situation where a brother tries to prevent other brothers from proposing marriage to his sister-friend who he feels are not just good enough for her. Yes, we know that there are hawks in the church who specialize in preying on innocent brothers or sisters, however, we must know that God has not called anyone to a ministry of canopying anyone from devourers.
Dear sisters of God, avoid a relationship that is not properly defined. Don't allow a brother spread his canopy over your life and chase the right suitor away. The Pharisees had this bad character as their trademark, they were not going to the kingdom and they prevented others from entering. Godly relationships aren't built on men's wisdom by trying to 'canopy' a sister.
As a lady, develop the power to politely say 'NO' and do not employ a brother to canopy over you. Seek God's will and He will locate you right at the center of His will maritally.
Father, may I not miss it in marriage in Jesus name, amen.
