1Chron28:9 "And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father..."
When I read this portion of the scriptures, I had a different insight. I learnt something about fatherhood that struck me. I've always known David to be a man after God's heart but we didn't see where he advised his sons to follow in his footsteps except at his old age when he was admonishing Solomon who was next in line for the throne.
Training children to be godly involves being a model of godlines before instructing them to be godly. David told Solomon to know the God of his father. If his father never had a 'God' that he knew or has seen David worshipped, Solomon would be confused. You can't train your children to be godly if they haven't seen it in you. Oral Robert said that his mum taught them about Jesus such that they thought he lived in their backyard.
Children are always looking for a model to take after, when you tell a child not to lie because God hate lies and he sees you lying, you have just told that child that God's word doesn't matter as much as your actions. For your child(ren) to 'imbibe' God, he must see it in you. They(children) won't follow the God of the father if the father doesn't follow his God passionately.
Father, I won't fail in parenting In Jesus name. Amen.
