PRAYING WITH YOUR HEART

January 17, 2020 · Lanre Oyeleke · 2 views

1 Samuel 1:13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk.NIV

Over ten years ago, I attended a church with my uncle. The church is known for their unique and physical style of prayer. That was my first time there. To be sincere, I looked on almost through out the prayer meeting because I saw diverse physical demonstrations, shaking of hands and legs in prayers. To be sincere, if you don't have physical energy, you may not be able to pray in that church because they had ushers/ministers that compelled people to pray. Some preachers lay emphasis on the volume of your prayers instead of the heart of prayer. True prayer starts from the heart.

God isn’t looking for fancy words or even many words. He isn’t looking for prepackaged prayers repeated mindlessly. Jesus warned against praying to impress others or using “vain repetition” (Matthew 6:5-7). Some people are fond of repeating the same phrase or line in prayers thinking the many repetition will hasten result. You see, God wants to hear what is on our hearts and minds. God is far more interested in what we are inside than outside. As He told Samuel, “For the LORD does not see as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). Some may scream in prayer just to impress but their heart is somewhere else.

Hannah's prayer was not a loud prayer. The Bible said, "Hannah was praying in her heart". Her heart was connected to heaven. In her heart, she was praying and communing with God. That was what God saw in her that made God grant her request. If you want to pray for hours on a busy day, let your heart do the praying. If you find yourself in a place where words cannot flow freely from your mouth, use the voice of your heart to communicate with heaven. One way to keep your heart focused on God is to engage it in prayer. The heart that pray is free from wandering thoughts.
