Jonah4: 2 He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. NIV
After the great awakening in Nineveh, Jonah was angry that God showed mercy to the people of that city. That sounds strange right? Yes it is. He went to Nineveh to proclaim that in 40 more days, Nineveh would be overthrown, Jonah 3. That was the message God gave him. Upon hearing this, the whole city repented and that got him angry. Shouldn't he be happy that his message brought people to the place of genuine repentance? I think he should but Jonah had a different mentality.
In Chapter 4, Jonah made it clear that the reason why he boarded a ship to Tarshish was because he knew that God is gracious and merciful. Do you think that was Jonah's problem? No, i don't think so. The real issue Jonah had was that being a prophet, he wanted his proclamation to come to pass so that when Nineveh is destroyed, it would be on record that he prophesied their destruction but when the Ninevites turned to God, he knew God would accept them and rescind on His decision to judge them. That was what Jonah perceived would happen that made him run away.
There are Jonah ministers&Christians today. They take pride in seeing evil prophecies and predictions come to pass so that they can say 'I said it' or 'I prophesied it'. When God reveals something pertaining to death and destruction to you, His joy is not to see it happen. God is only pointing your attention to what the enemy is about to do so that you can pray. Those that operate in the prophetic must take note of this. That evil happened after you prophesied it does not validate your prophetic ministry. We should lead people into finding solution through Christ even if what God has shown us seems bleak and terrifying.
If anyone brings a negative revelation to you, it does not mean it would happen. The devil is waiting for you to react in fear while God is also expecting you to react with faith. The choice is yours.
