Psalm2:8 Ask of me, and I will give thee the nations for thine inheritance, And the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
THE CONCEPT OF NATION
I was teaching a group of people sometime ago and i asked them if they understood what the word 'nation' meant from the context in which it is used in the bible. Most of them said it meant country. A deeper study of the root word from the Greek language where the word nation was coined from refers to ethnic groups or tribes not country. There are about 196 political countries in the world but there are 17,072 nations( people groups/ tribes) all over the world.
Anytime you see that word 'nation' in your bible, God is referring to ethnic groups. God's desire for the nation is revealed in Psalm86:9- All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, Lord; they will bring glory to your name. God's desire is for the nations of the earth to worship Him but how would the 'nations' worship 'Yahweh' if they haven't heard about Him? All over the world, people are into different forms of worship but there are billions that are yet to start giving their worship to Jehovah.
God's word has promised to give us the nations of the world as our inheritance and the uttermost part of the earth as our possession IF we ask. Inheritance in that context doesn't mean we would become land vendors among the nations. What the bible is saying is that we shall possess the nations for God and make men worship Him. If we can successfully turn the hearts of men to Christ among the nations and make them give their worship unto Jehovah, then we have possessed them. We can start on our knees by asking God to give us the several nations of the world that has not heard the gospel.
Father, give me the nations.
