TRAINING vs TEACHING
There is an age-long argument among some parents till date. The argument is centred on whether a trained child can become wayward or not. For me, the argument is needless because God's word is clear on the matter. The word of God clearly stated in Pro22:6 that we should train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, HE WOULD NOT DEPART FROM IT. I believe that's clear. There's no ambiguity in that. It implies that If you train your child, it is very certain the child won't depart from it because God's word said so.
The problem has always been in our understanding of what it is to train and teach a child. Training and teaching are similar but there's a slight difference. Teaching involves giving instructions about what you want done but training involves monitoring to ensure that given instructions are carried out rightly. Anyone can teach you how to make soap by giving you the steps to be taken but when you're trained to make soap, your trainer would demonstrate it to you first while you watch and later bring you to the experiment table so that you(the trainee) can do what he has done while monitoring you strictly to ensure you comply to the pattern. Now, that is training.
Teaching is good but training is better. There are parents that taught their children but only a few trained their children. Training is rigorous and painstaking yet it is the biblical recommendation for raising godly seeds. Don't just give instructions to your children, watch over them to ensure that those instructions are carried out till they internalize them. This shouldn't be a one day affair but it must be continous till godliness becomes a life style. Parenting is a 24-hours job and training is rigorous.
Father, i receive the grace to train the children you have given to me In Jesus name.
