Several years ago, I heard a story about a man who became disatisfied with his condition because he had one cloth. He decided to end his life by drowning in the river. When he got to the river, he removed his cloth and threw it somewhere.
A naked man who was in hiding rushed to pick those clothes and began to thank God for providing clothes for him to wear for the first time in life. When the other man heard the content of his prayers of thanksgiving, he rescinded his decision.
The opening text is one of the cures I found for discontentment& the needless unhealthy pursuit of things in life. Some people have their eyes fixed on what they don't have that others have. This is the reason for mad chase&hot pursuit. Those in this category often compare themselves with others.
In 2 Corinthians 10:13, Paul says, "For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise".
Instead of living a life of thanksgiving for what is on ground, they complain and murmur to God about what he has not provided. Our attitude in the face of lack should be that of thanksgiving first for what God has provided not complaint.
One truth you must settle in your heart is that you cannot have everything and no man has everything. Those you envy lack something they are looking for and what you have is what someone is seeking&begging God to have. If you understand this, you won't put yourself under undue pressure.
My wife taught me this sometime ago. I complained to her that we spent so much in few days and that we needed more money. She drew my attention to the fact that it was God who provided what we spent not our human effort so we should thank him. Quickly, I switched to thanksgiving mode. I pushed our needs aside and focused on what the Lord has done.
The more you focus on what you don't have, you'll be sad all the time. Life and vigour will leave you gradually till you become an emotional wreck. Can you start thanking God for that little thing until it multiplies?
