Classical cessationists believe that miracles, healing, gifts of prophecy and tongues ceased at the completion of the bible canon. They assert that the completion of the canon is what Paul referred to as the 'perfect' that was coming.
1 Corinthians 13:8-10 says, "Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. [9] For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. [10] BUT WHEN THAT WHICH IS PERFECT IS COME, then that which is in part shall be done away"( KJV).
The question of 'What is the perfect Paul referred to' is a raging debate among scholars. The classical cessationist insist it is the completion of the canon( bible) while another school of thought believe Paul was referring to the glorification of the believers at the coming of Christ. What exactly is it?
1 Corinthians 13:11-12 says, "When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. [12] Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, BUT THEN I WILL KNOW EVERYTHING COMPLETELY, just as God now knows me completely".
Now, I want you to link verses 8- 12 of the text under consideration together. You will notice that the tone of Paul as regards the cessation of gifts sounds more like one awaiting the coming of Christ because he talked about a time of perfection when his knowledge will be perfect.
At the completion of the canon, no one had been perfected yet till now and not one person in the body of Christ can claim to have full knowledge. What we all have is partial knowledge. We shall enter into the fullness of knowledge and perfection when Christ comes. That is the perfect Paul was referring to.
The implication is that while we are waiting for the perfect to come, the gifts of the Spirit will continue to operate all over the world. God will give his gifts to hungry hearts and willing vessels ready to display the power and glory of God among the nations.
Don't let imbalanced knowledge rob you of God's gifts. If you keep listening to those who talk down on miracles&the manifestation of Spiritual gifts, you may not experience it because you'll be in doubt about it because your faith will be hindered. It is because original exist, that is why fake also exist. Don't despise the authentic because of that which is not authentic. God's power is real.
