The singular word 'nation' in the bible often refer to Israel, depending on context. Israel is a homogenous nation with similar cultural and linguistic identity. They pride themselves as one to whom God revealed himself to their ancestors. This deep seated pride makes them look down on people from other nations.
Often, when the word "nations" is in plural, it is referring to other tribes and ethnic groups outside the shores of Israel. Anyone who is not a Jew( an Israelite) is a gentile. It is redemption through the blood of Christ that made us partakers of the commonwealth of Israel ( Eph 2:12).
What they failed to realize was that God revealed himself to them first so that they can spread his fame and name to other nations around them. They were to be the launch pad through whom other nations will hear the gospel. It was not to end with them because God has every nation on earth in mind. Their location in the world map was also strategic for their assignment of spreading the name of God to other nations.
If you check the world map, Israel is located at the junction/ border of major continents in the world: Africa, Europe&Asia. I believe God did this so that they can have easy access to spread the gospel to other parts of the world but what happened despite this great task&opportunity? Israelites held back, they didn't go to other nations as God expected of them.
Even after the day of Pentecost, instead of spreading out, they remained in Jerusalem until persecution arose in Acts 8:1. It was that persecution that made the gospel spread to gentile nations yet the apostles remained in Jerusalem.
God's plan for us is to spread the gospel among the nations. This entails crossing cultures to preach the gospel. If you are privileged to come from a nation (tribe) where there are sufficient believers and an indigenous church planting movement is present, start praying&planning to spread the same gospel message to other nations (tribes) that have not heard the gospel.
God's plan is for all tribes and tongues to bring him worship at his throne in heaven ( Rev 7:9) but how will that happen If we do not witness the gospel to them? It is not a coincidence that there are foreigners living around you. God sent them to you so they can hear the gospel through you. That Fulani, Hausa man selling carrots, cabbage, cucumber at the corner of your street is a mission project at your doorstep. He must not return to his domain without hearing the gospel.
If that man is won unto the Lord, when he returns to his people, he'll take the message of the gospel to them.
