COMMON SENSE IS GOOD: USE IT

Proverbs 21:16* The person who strays from common sense will end up in the company of the dead. NLT

In my Christian journey, I have been part of some extreme actions that required the exercise of discretion or what is known as common sense but we downplayed it because of our understanding at that time. Those days, we felt taking helpful initiative was not right except God speaks.

We once prayed for a brother suffering hernia who was writhing in pains until he died. We gathered to pray around the brother while in pains on the floor. None of us was smart enough to suggest that we take him to the hospital. His life wasted. We could have taken him to the hospital while the brethren keep praying for his healing.

What is common sense? This refers to sound judgement and practical wisdom developed over a period of time. God in his wisdom and mercy gave every human on earth the power to exercise discretional powers in the affairs of life.

Often, we downplay this God given power and push all responsibilities on God whereas he is waiting on us to act. God did not create a robot who has to be teleguided, he has given us a measure of freedom to decide on a course of action that is good for us.

Common sense is not anti God as some think. It is a gift from God for our use and benefit.

The exercise of common sense does not mean we are relegating the Holy Spirit. It simply means we'll start taking responsibility where and when needed while God will play his part. God has not created man without giving him certain responsibilities to perform.

One of my room mates back on campus shared his experience along this line. He registered for a GCE exam and he began to fast and pray instead of studying hard. When the result came out, the only subject he passed was Christian Religious Studies. Anytime I remember his experience, I jokingly say, "God honoured his word".

Dearest, the exercise of common sense is not a sin. In fact, just know that God will not do for you what he has given you the mental and physical capacity to do. Common sense will do certain things uncommon sense by way of divine direction will do other things common sense cannot do. Wisdom is knowing when and where each applies.
