In the first part of this teaching, it was established that man's greatest problem is sin because it was passed down to mankind from Adam. Every human on earth was born a sinner even before he started committing sin.
The bible says, "When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned"( Romans 5:12 NLT). Sin was inherited because of Adam's disobedience.
Now, that is not without its consequence. The sin of Adam brought DEATH on the entire human race. This is the greatest consequence of sin. God gave mankind life eternal but the sin of Adam truncated God's plan and introduced death to the entire human race.
Romans 6:23 says, "FOR THE WAGES (Consequence) OF SIN IS DEATH, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord".
You must understand that sin does not necessarily result in physical death right away. If it were, all sinners would be dead by now. Even Adam did not die physically immediately after he sinned. The death implied in Romans 6:23 is SPIRITUAL DEATH.
Spiritual death is separation from God. This is the state of everyone that is not in Christ- they are dead spiritually. They may be walking around physically, jumping, shouting and full of life yet they are dead spiritually because they are separated from God.
“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins" (Ephesians 2:1 NKJV)
“When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins" (Colossians 2:13).
Spiritual death (separation from God) was the reason Adam hid himself from God after he sinned( Gen 3:8). Every sinner you know today is hidden from God because death reigns in their life.
The state of mankind without Jesus is a sorry state. This is because he is separated from his maker. A man without Christ is to be pitied and not envied no matter how wealthy or highly placed.
The goodnews is that as long as the sinner is still breathing, there is hope. This is where the gospel comes in. The only sinner that cannot be helped is the one that has stopped breathing.
