I once asked my bible study learners to tell me what the gospel is. I got several answers that shows most of them do not have a biblical understanding of the common church word "gospel". Some churches have the word "gospel" in their name yet they are not preaching it.
There are different types of gospel in our world today that has been used as a bait to attract people to the church but not to the cross of Christ. "Another gospel" which is not the true gospel has produced people who are in church but not in Christ. Unfortunately, "another gospel" has gained traction.
In Galatians 1:8, Paul spoke about another gospel: "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed".
So, what is the biblical gospel? Before I define it, I want you to see the true gospel as a solution to man's greatest problem. If you don't understand or know man's greatest problem, you may not understand the true gospel.
Man's greatest problem is not poverty. A lot of unsaved men are wealthy. In fact, in most nations of the world, the richest are not saved. This implies that the gospel is not about giving wealth because if that is all it is, many wealthy unbelievers wouldn't need it because they have it already.
Sickness is not man's greatest problem. There are many healthy unbelievers while some believers are sick. If our gospel is centred around what unbelievers already have, we don't have any valid message. So, what is the greatest problem of the entire human race?
Romans 3:23 says, "for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (KJV).
Psalm 51:5 says, "For I was born a sinner— yes, from the moment my mother conceived me"( NLT).
Therefore, SIN is the greatest problem of mankind. Why? Because man was born into a sinful state because of the disobedience of Adam. This is called "Original sin".
Romans 5:12 says, "When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned".
