QUESTIONS ON MARRIAGE Pt. 3

2Cor 6:14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? NIV

CAN I MARRY AN UNBELIEVER?

After teaching a group of youths in a convention programme, a sister walked up to me asking if it was appropriate for her to marry an unbeliever that was interested in her. I told her that a Christian cannot marry a non-christian. She told me the unbelieving guy was in love with her. I perceived she was considering the guy's proposal. Somehow, there was an inward witness in her prompting her that it was wrong but she needed someone to either give her a go ahead or to dissuade her.

Dear single brother and sister, you cannot find Christ-like love in an unbeliever. Much of what you will get is what looks like it but not the real love. The bible likened you to Christ but referred to the unbeliever as Belial(2Cor6:15), the bible called you righteous but shades the unbeliever as wicked, the same bible called you a light and salt(Matthew 5:13-16). Anyone that doesn't belong to the fold should not be considered for marriage at all. There is a subtle campaign for inter-faith marriage to foster unity among different faith. Marriage is too precious to be used as reconciliatory tool. Some are deceived with physical mien or the show of affection they are receiving from an unbeliever. The devil can be nice because he has a target. Some rationalize 'love' as the be all for a good marriage but we know 'love' alone is not enough.

Anyone that doesn't have Christ is unpredictable. If there are misunderstandings, while you're attempting to resolve issues the bible way, the unbelieving partner may employ the devil's method because that's his principal. Also, an unbeliever cannot be led by the Spirit of God. Among many other reasons for marriage, the fulfilment of your purpose is paramount and who you marry determines your success to a large extent in that regard. Jokingly, I always say that if you marry an unbeliever, the devil would be your father-in-law and demons would be your flat mate. You belong to a holy kingdom ruled by God, your spouse must be a member of that kingdom.
