QUESTIONS ON MARRIAGE Pt. 4

February 02, 2020 · Lanre Oyeleke · 2 views

Galatians 3:26 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.(28) There is neither Jew nor Greek , slave nor free , male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. NIV

IS TRIBE A FACTOR IN THE CHOICE OF A LIFE PARTNER?

There was a sister who told one of the ministers in her church about the brother that proposed marriage to her. This senior minister knew that brother was a pretender and wasn't worth that sister because she was committed to the Lord. The senior minister tried to dissuade her from marrying that brother but she insisted because they are from the same tribe. She married the brother on tribal sentiments not because he was the will of God. Years after, the marriage ran into serious crisis. This sister was doing fine in business before he married this brother but her business collapsed because of a bad marriage. Her husband was a drunk and professional wife beater. She plunged herself into marital pain because of tribal sentiments.

God is not a tribalist. In the kingdom, there is no room for tribal prejudice. The God that created the Jew also created the Gentiles. When we come to Christ, we cease to be described by our ethnic and tribal identities in spiritual matters. Paul said, "So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer" (2Cor 5:16).Looking at the man IN Christ from a tribal standpoint is WORLDLY. That is what Paul said. In Christ, we have only one tribe that we all belong to. That is the tribe of the Lion of Judah. Painfully, there are tribal churches where the supremacy of a particular tribe is promoted. I was shocked the day a minister told me that only people from a particular tribe can become the General overseer of his church.

Here in Africa, we are conscious of tribe and language. We have seen cases of families refusing their daughters or sons their would-be spouses for tribal reasons. The man in Christ should not behave like that. What matters most in the choice of a life partner is salvation and the perfect will of God. The former is generic while the latter is specific. Dear singles, do not miss God on the grounds of tribal sentiment. God created all. No race is better than the other. Stay hooked to God's will.

Action point

Father, I will not miss your perfect will in marriage in Jesus name. Amen
