ASSURED OF HIS GOODNESS AND MERCY
Have you ever heard about the sure mercies of David? This is the irrevocable mercies promised to David and his house ( 2 Samuel 23:5; Psalm 18:50; Psalm 89:28, 49), and the great promise to which all these passages point (2 Samuel 7:8-16). In the dispensation under which David lived, none like this type of mercy has ever been seen or promised considering what happened to his predecessor. God promised David an everlasting dynasty that cannot be wiped away even if his children sin (2 Sam7:14-15). That's God's sovereignty at work.
However, the covenant of sure mercies transcend physical throne. It is a covenant that promised resurrection from the dead. For the son of David to reign for ever, he would need to avoid the chains of death that plagued every man. This hope of resurrection life for the messianic son of David is why the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David said: “For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.”– Psalm 16:10. The same Holy Ghost through Peter explains that David was speaking of Jesus Christ when he spoke of the resurrection of the Holy One of his house: “He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.” – Acts 2:31-32
Christ rose from the dead to fulfill God’s covenant with David for a throne that would be established forever. David’s house would live on. The mercies were made sure in Christ. Any one who is in Christ is free to partake in that order of mercy. That's the mercy that gives us the assurance of our salvation and justification ( Romans5:1). That mercy is the reason why you can boldly walk into God's presence without a feeling of guilt because the righteousness of Christ has been imputed into you (2 Cor5:17-21). Hallelujah! You are now the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus not because of what you've done but because of the mercies made sure in Christ. The purpose of that mercy is to make free eternal salvation available to all. Let's tell sinners that God is no longer counting men's sins against them and that he is reconciling the world to himself right now. This is the good news we are to share.
CONFESSION: Father, I thank you because I am a partaker of the sure mercies of David. I receive the grace to spread the news of the gospel to sinners. I receive the grace to communicate to sinners how they can be partakers of the sure mercies of David in Jesus name. I walk in the realities of Psalms 23 in Jesus name.
