John3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. KJV
Nicodemus was a respected Jewish leader who desired to know God better. He sought for knowledge on how he could be saved just as religion is trying to get men saved. Jesus told him, "I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God."(John 3:3 NLT). Nicodemus didn't understand what Jesus meant about being born again because his understanding of birth was limited to what happens when a woman is in the labour room. Biologically, every child can be born only once but here, Jesus is saying that everyone must be born twice. What does it mean to be born again?
To be born again is to be regenerated(John3:5, Titus3:5). It is to accept the Lordship of Christ into one's life(Rom10:10). It is a spiritual birth that removes our nature of sin so that we can be called the righteousness of God in Christ(2Cor5:21). We all were born in sin, "For I was born a sinner— yes, from the moment my mother conceived me."(Psalms 51:5 NLT). Sin brought (spiritual) death upon the entire human race(Rom6:23). This type of death brought separation between man and God. Initially, God created man for a loving relationship but the sin of Adam altered that sweet communion. What Adam destroyed, Jesus came to restore.
Those that have accepted Christ have been born twice(biological & spiritual). They shall die only once(Heb9:27) or go to heaven when rapture occurs but those that are born only once(biological) shall die twice. The bible calls it second death: "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars - their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death" (Revelation 21:8). This second death is eternal, I do not desire this for you my dear friend. Anyone who doesn't believe in Christ(whilst still living) risk experiencing second death. After death, there's no repentance in the grave.
