CONFIDENCE IN THE FLESH KILLS

August 30, 2020 · Lanre Oyeleke · 2 views

Phil3:3 For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh--

Years back, I heard a sad story about a vibrant brother. He boasted in a service that he won't fall into immorality even if he sees the nakedness of a woman. The devil heard that and he arranged a temptation for him. This brother received a distress call from a sister in church late in the night. Instead of asking the Lord whether to go or not, he dashed to the sister's house out of fleshly zeal. Upon getting there, he saw a fair looking lady in a seductive mood. Alas! He fell.

There's a type of confidence that sets a man on the path of destruction. Fleshly confidence in oneself is a rehearsal for falling flat in this race. Most times, such confidence wears the garb of self-righteousness. When you meet self-righteous folks, they'll see the wrongs in others and boast to people why they can't fall into certain sins. They act as though they are immune to sin whereas the bible says, "Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself."(Gal6:1NLT).

From that scripture, it is clear that the one restoring a fallen brother can fall into the same sin if he is not careful let alone a self-righteous folk whose feet are set on the path of destruction. Confidence in the flesh will prevent you from taking heed and being watchful. It takes grace to stand and to be sustained in this race. However, do not take grace for granted and neglect the fact that you're still a mortal that is prone to errors. The thought of this should humble you and make you do what Hebrews 4:16 says, "Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."

Action point

Father, uphold me by your arms of grace and help me to be watchful in Jesus name.
