WHEN HE DIED, NO ONE CRIED

June 26, 2020 · Lanre Oyeleke · 2 views

2 Chron 21:20 Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. No one was sorry when he died. They buried him in the City of David, but not in the royal cemetery. NLT

Jehoram was the son of Jehoshaphat, a righteous king. Being the eldest son, he ascended the throne of his father after his death. One would expect that he would continue in the ways of his father but his was a total deviation. He was known for wickedness even to the extent of killing his brothers: "But when Jehoram had become solidly established as king, he killed all his brothers and some of the other leaders of Judah." (2 Chronicles 21:4 NLT). His wickedness caught God's attention. He sent Prophet Elijah to declare doom and death on him(12-15).

What caught my attention was what the bible said about his death. It was recorded that: "No one was sorry when he died". That's not a good remark. I want to talk to leaders today and I believe you are one. It is either you're leading in your home, church, office, business, community, state or nation. Do not use the power of your office to perpetrate wickedness. It is not a good thing for someone to die without being remembered for something good. In as much as we are not living to please men, I know that it is impossible to live right and be just without leaving positive footprints in the hearts of men. The moment good people( note that) start praying to God to remove you from office, something is definitely wrong with you and your leadership style.

An African Head of State died years back, the people began to dance and sing. Some even sang in churches mentioning his name derogatorily because he was wickedness personified. Good people were not sorry at his death. This scripture was fulfilled at his death: "When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices; when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy." (Prov11:10). When you die, we should thank God for a life well spent and at the same time, we should be sorry that we would be missing someone who has impacted lives positively. There are children who may not be sorry for the death of their father or mother. There are students who won't mourn the death of a lecturer because of his level of corruption and wickedness. There are bosses whose transfer will make someone do thanksgiving in church because of how he has trampled on the rights and benefits of juniors. Don't let that happen to you. You can decide daily how you want to be remembered after your demise.

Action point
