Eph5:18-19 Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts.NLT
The commonest expression of worship is through music. All that some know about worship is music. Worship is beyond music. However, it is one of the common ways we give expression to our worship. For our music to be acceptable to God, our songs must be spiritual. They must be rooted in the revelation of the word regardless of the beat. Apostle Paul enjoined we should be filled with the Holy Spirit. One of the results of infilling with the Holy Spirit is that we shall sing Psalms and hymns, spiritual songs and make music to the Lord in our hearts. Sometimes, I don't sing aloud, I just make music in my heart unto the Lord.
I love that phrase "spiritual songs". Some songs may sound spiritual but they are not. I was actively leading songs years back. I discovered that I rendered some songs that were not spiritual. What makes a song spiritual is not because Jesus is mentioned in the song. Spiritual songs are songs that edify. They are rooted in the understanding of redemption. Colossians3:16 says, "Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts."(NLT). Spiritual songs are rooted in the message of Christ.
Many years ago, I was inside a church auditorium. A young man picked the microphone and sang melodiously in a language we don't understand. The accompaniment was superb. Someone asked to know the meaning of his song. His reply was " Jesus is the food we are eating." Though his song was melodious but it lacked the substance of spirituality. Our musical expression of worship should be about Jesus not us. It shouldn't be an avenue to display how talented and skillful we are. David's music was spiritual. Quite a number of verses in Psalms are songs of praise. The music ministry of David was spiritual to the extent that Saul had to employ his service so that he can be relieved of demonic oppression(1Sam16:14-23). Spiritual songs must minister to God and the saints. If an unsaved person listen to a spiritual song, it should minister salvation.
Express your worship to him through music.
