LESSONS FROM THE LIFE OF BROTHER APOLLOS part 1

Acts18:24 Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. NIV

SOUND SCRIPTURAL EDUCATION

I have been studying the book of Acts of apostles recently. When I got to chapter eighteen from verse 24 downwards, I saw certain things about Apollos that I hadn't given deep thoughts to previously. The introduction of this humble brother was without flattery. They told us who he was, a Jew. No title, no office, no portfolio just a brother or we say a believer. We were not told if he headed a church but I know that if he did, the scriptures wouldn't be silent about it. The writer did not stop there, he went further to tell us about certain striking qualities that made this Christian brother to stand out from among the brethren. First, he was learned with a thorough knowledge of the scriptures.

Every child of God must emulate Apollos in that regard. It doesn't matter whether you are a sanitation officer in church or a chorister. During my service year, my national leader in Jos, Plateau state told us the story of his water baptism experience. He told us that the driver of the bus who drove them to where they did baptism explained the scriptures to them while he was driving them. They were surprised at his depth in the word even though he was the driver of the bus. That's how every Christian should be. If Pastors can raise men and women to be like Apollos in the church, certain burden would be off their necks.

Why some believers are confused and have become a burden to their Pastors in the counseling room is because they are not rooted properly in the word. Apollos must have taken his time to dig deep into the scriptures and submit to learning before the Bible could say that he was learned in scriptures. Do not leave adequate study of the scriptures and learning to your pastors alone. Be serious with the word of God as if you're preaching the next sermon. I live close to an Islamic theology school. I noticed they have numerous students who enroled for a seven years training in Islamic theology not because they want to pioneer their mosques but because they want to represent their religion well by gaining depth of knowledge. If you meet heretics, one thing that stand them out is their confidence and knowledge. Jehovah witness is a good example. Their young members can confidently engage some senior Pastors in debate, why? Because they have depth in biblical heresy. Who says that you cannot be deep in the knowledge of God's word as a believer even without leadership title in church? Be hungry to know as much as you can through learning.
