YOU NEED A JETHRO COUNSELOR

September 02, 2019 · Lanre Oyeleke · 2 views

Ex18:19-20 Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him. Teach them his decrees and instructions, and show them the way they are to live and how they are to behave. NIV

The story of Moses and father-in-law( Jethro) is worth hearing over and over. Jethro visited Moses in the wilderness. He saw how Moses was running his ministry. Moses was attending to people one by one with their several cases. In this case, not a few persons but multitudes of people. They wore Moses out. When Jethro saw the stress involved, he gave him a wise counsel on delegating duties so that he can have some rest and focus on other things.

Jethro was not as anointed as Moses, though he was a priest but he wasn't leading a large congregation like Moses. The church in the wilderness was about 3 million in population. We did not see any record of Jethro performing special signs and wonders but the wise counsel he gave Moses helped his ministry. One would have thought that a man of Moses'calibre who had deep experience with God would know everything but he was a novice in administrative matters. I still wonder why God didn't tell him what Jethro told him. At least God is all-knowing.

No matter how gifted you are, you need a mentor. You need someone who has a deeper knowledge and experience to put you through. God can tell us everything but I noticed He doesn't tell us everything. He expects us to form a close relationship with those he placed above us so that we can learn in humility. The day we know everything, we'll be puffed up with pride. Sometimes, the people he would use for us in this regard maybe men who haven't achieved the kind of feat we have achieved, yet he has put the counsel we need in their mouth. That's a mystery. Don't let your achievements overwhelm you to a point where you cannot listen to those God has put the spirit of fathering upon.
