SUBMITTED HIMSELF FOR DISCIPLESHIP
The concept of discipleship is very clear to the Jews but those with Western mindset may not have a good grasp of what it truly means. I think those of us that are Africans still understand it to some extent. Among the Jews, they have a strong apprenticeship policy for almost every trade or profession. It is not something you do in one year and opt out. It takes a large chunk of their lives before becoming a master. I perceive that after becoming a master, the previous master is still regarded as the master to the graduate apprentice because of his years of experience in the profession. That was why Jesus said: "A servant can't be greater than his master", John15:20.
Even Jesus could not start his assignment on earth not until he chose twelve disciples he could impart. Brother Apollos submitted himself to learning and discipleship under Aquila and Priscilla. Even though he had thorough knowledge of scriptures and had been preaching boldly in the synagogue, he may even be pulling crowd yet he deemed it fit to receive instruction from those that are ahead of him spiritually. Being ahead of someone spiritually has nothing to do with height attained but depth in God. If you think you are deeply rooted in the faith, someone somewhere is deeper and you need to locate that fellow and submit to him or her.
Apollos knew that if he would go far in life and ministry, the place of discipleship was key. Let me ask you, who is discipling you? Some folks may say Holy Spirit is their discipler. Actually, he is available to teach us all things but I'm yet to see a man that is a high flyer in the kingdom who has no one standing in the place of mentor or discipler in his life. God could have taught Moses all he needed to know but He didn't despite their closeness. Jethro schooled Moses on leadership and delegation of duties yet his congregation wasn't as large as that of Moses'. No matter how far you think you've gone, sit under a discipler and learn more.
