Col3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. ESV
CORE VALUES ARE IMPORTANT
Mr Jay fell in love with Mrs Jane. Both were living fine and happy. However, Mr Jay felt he wasn't making enough money in his home country. He believes money is everything so he decided to travel out of his country to seek greener pastures. The Job opportunity he had outside his country had stringent conditions attached one of which was that he had to leave his family behind. That became a big issue for his wife but Mr Jay felt it wasn't a big deal leaving his family behind as long as he makes plenty money and send financial support home. He doesn't care about the emotions of his wife neither did he care about being there for their children. Mr Jay packed his bags and left his family for a foreign country. The decision to travel was influenced by his core value- to make money at all cost not minding the family.
One major influence on our decisions are our core values. A core value is a principle or belief that a person or organization views as being of central importance. I discovered that 99% of decisions people make is centred around their core values. Those core values may not necessarily be healthy but most people end up deciding based on their core values. A man who places a high value on making money than on building a healthy and strong home will make decisions similar to that of Mr Jay. A single whose core values for marriage is centred around physical looks and status only will most likely marry someone with the kind of physical looks and status he/she desires not minding character. Some married folks will make a different marital decision if given the opportunity because over time, they realized their decision to marry the person they married was influenced by unhealthy core values.
Healthy core values is a determinant of quality decisions. Poor core values are the catalyst for poor decisions that people make. It is pertinent we review our core values and sieve out those that aren't bible-based. As believers, we are meant to have bible-based core values because If we do, we'll always make the right decisions in life. Most people are burdened about not hearing God or seeing visions. Some are still waiting for the day God will speak loudly from heaven to give instructions. Well, the word of God is the voice of God to us. In it, there are principles upon which we can run our lives. Certain things may not be spelt out directly in the word but if you study with an open heart, you'll find the principles that guides that which you desire. On the strength of your discovery from the word of God, you can build word-based core values which will in turn influence your decisions in life.
What are my core values? Are they bible-based?
