In history, Thessalonica was a major port city in the then Greco-Roman world. It was a city of pagans with a very high level of promiscuity. In their culture, temple prostitution was a common thing. Most of us know about prostitution but not many of us know about temple prostitution.

In ancient times, there were male and female prostitutes in pagan temples who offered sexual services to worshipers. Actually, it was part of the rituals in those temples at that time in worship of Aphrodite- god of fertility.

Temple sex was part of demon worship. God forbade the Jews from this immoral act by giving them a specific command against it (Deut 23:17-18). Ancient people knew that sexual immorality was connected to demon worship and still is today.

While we may not have temples around where people have sex, the new testament narrative is that our bodies is the temple of God (a place of worship) and sexual immorality is a desecration of that temple. That is why Paul called sexual immorality a sin against the body.

Some may say, "I don't sleep with prostitutes, just me and my side chic". Well, both of you are prostitutes in the sense that you both have given your bodies to each other illegally to desecrate God's temple. Prostitution is not just a literal thing in the bible, it is also idiomatic.

1 Corinthians 6:15-16, 18-19(NLT)

[15] Don’t you realize that your bodies are actually parts of Christ? Should a man take his body, which is part of Christ, and join it to a prostitute? Never!

[16] And don’t you realize that if a man joins himself to a prostitute, he becomes one body with her? For the Scriptures say, “The two are united into one.”

[18] Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body.

[19] Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself,

Your body is God's temple. A temple is a place of worship.  If you ever join yourself in sexual union with anyone that is not your spouse, you become one with that person and you both desecrate your temples. That is why sex of that nature is worship gone wrong.

Sex is spiritual. It can open her victims to high level of demonic oppression, obsession and influence. Sex opens a door for the free flow of demons in the lives of people.

A sexually immoral person is a house of demons. Shun sexual immorality.
