My dad once told the story of a woman who lost her child. When the news got to her that her child had died, she shouted, "Oju ti owo", meaning "Money has been disgraced". I was told she kept repeating that statement on top of her voice on the street.
I don't know how much she had spent but her statement tells that she had spent so much money on her sick child believing money can get the problem solved. Unfortunately, money was disgraced.
The next counsel Paul gave after telling the rich not to be proud about their riches is that they should not put their trust in money which is unreliable: "Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and NOT TO TRUST IN THEIR MONEY, WHICH IS SO UNRELIABLE..." (1 Tim 6:17)
Money cannot be trusted because it is highly unreliable.
I have seen rich people die of ailments their wealth couldn't handle. If you move close to some wealthy people, some of them have issues that has defied dollars and pounds sterling. A generation that trust money more than God will always hit a brick wall in life
Money is good, there is no doubt about it. Without it, we won't transact and get certain things done in the kingdom and in our personal lives. However, money is meant to be a servant not a master.
The preachers of mammon are presenting money as a substitute for God. Their words shows they worship money in their hearts. They boast about it on their altars and make spurious statements that some pagans will never make. Ha! Mammon is dangerous.
Instead of saying, "There is nothing impossible for God", their slogan is, "what money cannot do, more money will do it". Little wonder why our generation is losing influence with God. I cannot imagine Elijah, Paul, Peter saying, "I will never follow a poor pastor".
When we made money the metrics of spirituality, we lost God and eroded the very essence of our faith.
One of the ways you'll know you now put your trust in money is that things you ought to pray about, you will not pray about it because you believe money will fix it. This may look subtle but it is one sign of trusting in money than in God.
Do you notice that when you don't have resources to execute certain projects, you pray about it asking the Lord for provision but for some other things you have the financial capacity to handle, you don't even remember to pray? Some may say, "why disturb God for everything even when you have the money to do it"?
Listen, If you don't have the money to achieve a desire, God expects you to trust him for supplies. If you have money to achieve it, God expect you to thank him for providing it and not act as If you got it by your power. Asking and thanking Him for provisions are expressions of trust in God.
For instance, when my children ask me for certain things, even when I have the money, i'll tell them to pray about it first before giving them. I won't tell them I have the money. Why? I am teaching them to trust the God who can provide all things and not me.
Proverbs 11:28 says, "Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf".
