MISDIRECTED ZEAL IS DANGEROUS

May 21, 2023 · Lanre Oyeleke · 2 views

Rom10: 2- I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal.

Heard the story of a man that went to the zoo asking to be allowed into the cage where lions were kept. He wanted to replicate Daniel's story by coming out of the lion's den unhurt.

He was granted access into the cage of lions. Without much ado, the lions feasted on him. He disgraced himself not God. Eventually, he lost his life from the injuries sustained.

I have heard and seen Christians that died foolishly out of zeal without accurate knowledge.

I was part of a prayer team years back. We went for a vigil and we met one of the brothers writhing in pain on the floor. He had hernia. Instead of taking him to the hospital, we prayed fervently.

The more prayed, the more he cried because he was in severe pains. Eventually, we lost him. None among us took the initiative of taking him to the hospital. We lost him due to misdirected zeal.

knowledge brings balance to zeal. Zeal without knowledge can throw one off balance all in the guise of spirituality.

Isaiah 33:6 says, "And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure".

Zeal without knowledge is common to babes or new converts that is why every young believer needs a discipler to disciple him into maturity in the things of the Spirit.

Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst (Isaiah 5:13 KJV).

Sometimes, out of zeal, believers die of sickness because they heard their pastor say he hasn't used a drug for decades.

Some will try to do same forgetting the fact that the man is living in a clean environment, eating good food with supplements and, resting well.

Applied knowledge is key to living a balanced Christian life.

No matter how prayerful or pious you are, nothing can take the place of knowledge.

Action point

Zeal is good but knowledge is better. Dig deep into God's word to know his mind. Go for accurate knowledge and live by your convictions.
