INWARD WITNESS- OUR TRAFFIC LIGHT
One of the ways by which God lead all his children after the word is through the inward witness of the Spirit in our spirit. For years, I've tried to describe what the inward witness is to believers around me and I'm comfortable using the traffic light to illustrate the dynamics of inward witness. Though an earthly phenomenon cannot perfectly describe spiritual things but somethings come close. When you're driving on the high way, the traffic light has three major indicator lights: Red, Amber/yellow, and Green. Red light is telling all drivers to stop, Amber is saying get ready to go while Green signals forward movement. This is how the inward witness works.
Man is a spirit, with a soul living in a body(1Thess5:23). Inward witness is a witness in our spirit to either go ahead with a decision or to stop.It has nothing to do with your mind. It is not a voice but a knowing from within your spirit. That's what some call intuition but the bible aptly describe it as a 'witness' in our spirit. When you're about taking a decision, if it is of God, there would be something like a 'green light' from within giving you a go ahead. It comes with peace and unmistakable assurance even when circumstances seems contrary. Don't mistake this with the voice of your mind. They are not the same. The mind lead us base on information but the witness of the Spirit leads based on spiritual perception. Also, if God is not leading in the direction we want to go, inward witness would beam in us like a 'red light' signaling danger or stop. It is like a restrain from within even when it looks juicy physically. You will just notice that the peace of God is totally absent from within you. I've been there before.
When I entered a wrong relationship in the university, I lost my peace from the onset but I was using my head to pull through saying the sister was good enough for me because she's spiritual. Let me share another experience. My son couldn't find his school bag sometimes ago. We searched everywhere for it in his school but we couldnt find it so we gave up on the search. When I got home, I had a witness ( a knowing)in my spirit that a particular girl in the school hostel could be helpful in the search. I called her on phone and she found it. My wife was surprised. That's just how inward witness works and it is always there for every child of God. However, you can sharpen your sensitivity to the witness of the Spirit to your spirit through constant study of the word and by praying in the spirit daily. Even when you receive a witness in your spirit about a thing, don't rush. Pray in tongues over and over. Give it time and be sure the witness persist for long. That's how it works.
