2Cor 1:12 For our proud confidence is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and godly sincerity, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you.
THE VOICE OF YOUR CONSCIENCE- MORAL GUIDE
James H. Aughey said, "Conscience is the voice of God in the soul.” The word conscience is coined from two word, 'Con'(with) and 'science'(knowledge). Conscience involves knowing something in our soul. The soul is the seat of our mind, will and emotions. Just as inward witness is of the spirit-man, conscience operates in the soulish realm. Why? Because it involves knowledge unlike inward witness. One good thing about conscience is that eveyone on planet earth has a conscience(Rom2:15-16). No man has excuse before God. In almost every portion of the scriptures where the word conscience is used, it is used in relation to proper conduct.
However, we need to look deeply into the issue of how God use conscience to lead his children. God didn't just create us to be spirit beings alone, we have minds that can think and discern what is right and wrong. For a child of God, the word of God is the activator of our conscience because it exist in the mind. Paul enjoined that we renew our minds with the word of God(Rom12:1-3). Why? So that we would know what the will of God is per time especially in matters relating to Christian conduct. Renewal of mind with the word makes our conscience comes alive. The role of the Spirit of God is to convict us through our conscience. Speaking of the Holy Spirit, Jesus said, “when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment” (John 16:8). When we respond to the voice of conscience, it becomes stronger. The Holy Spirit is always ready to help us yield to the prompting of our conscience IF we cooperate with him.
On the other hand, it is possible for a man's conscience to die or to become inactive. The bible talked about those whose consciences have been seared with hot iron(1Tim4:2). How do people get to that point where their consciences becomes dead? Very simple. When people consciously ignore and disobey the voice of their conscience, they deaden it gradually. I took some kids to an excursion site. The driver told me not to declare all the numbers so that I can short-pay the cashier. It seemed like a smart idea but immediately, my conscience pricked me. The knowledge of right and wrong through the word came alive in me and the Spirit of God enabled me to act right. Truly, unbelievers have consciences but the absence of the Spirit's empowerment sometimes prevent them from acting right.
CONFESSION: Father, my conscience shall not die in the name of Jesus.
