John 21:4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.NIV
Spiritual dullness or insensitivity is a spiritual disease that is worse than HIV. At a time, the disciples of Jesus were spiritually dull. After the death of Jesus Christ, some of his disciples joined Peter in fishing. I perceive they must have been tired of all that happened and their hopes may have been dashed.
Their response to all the events that happened caused coldness of heart and lack of zeal to continue their pursuit of the ministry. Peter may have felt this way so he went fishing and others followed him. They were expecting an economic& political Messiah just like the Jews of their time.
What amazed me in the story was that they did not recognize Jesus on time when he came to the river where they were fishing. They were spiritually dull to know that Christ was staring at them in the eyes.
Having spent three and half years with him, they should have recognized his voice, his physique and his mannerism but on this occasion, their perception was dull. This story describes the life of many believers today.
When Jesus comes around, most believers don't recognize Him. If Jesus comes to our street announcing himself as Jesus, not many will recognize Him still. Sometimes, when he comes to meet with us, He doesn't make noise because He comes to meet us in places we least expect.
Jesus had come to some severally in meetings, conferences, through teachings, counsel, worship sessions, daily devotionals and even on the pages of scriptures but they didn't recognize Him because of spiritual dullness.
Some persons miss divine encounters because they expect a thunderous display& some other specific things to happen whereas, divine encounter may look casual on the outside but the in it contains the treasures our life need.
Just like prayers& faith. Some persons don't believe in simple prayer. If it doesn't have some "acrobatic" display coupled with baritone voice plus capital letter tongues, they won't believe. This has made many miss God.
The disciples failed to recognize Jesus because He appeared casually. If an angel had announced Jesus in the skies coupled with thunder and lightning, they may have known that divinity had come to visit. Surprisingly, Jesus came casually.
In Ephesians1:17-18, apostle Paul knew that spiritual dullness is inimical to our spiritual health so he prayed that God will give us the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Christ and that the eyes of our understanding be enlightened.
We cannot encounter Christ and recognize Him until our spiritual eyes are open and our perception is active.
That's something to pray about daily. Some have been waiting on God for direction or a word from God for years. God has been speaking but they are not hearing because of spiritual dullness. Oftentimes, one of the causes of spiritual dullness is carnality. A carnal believer is always dull and may never pick spiritual signals.
May you never miss Jesus again.
Father, open the eyes of my understanding so that I can recognize Jesus. I don't want to miss divine encounters with divinity again In Jesus name.
