2 Pet1:6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; KJV
ADD TEMPERANCE TO KNOWLEDGE
The synonym of temperance is self-control. To have self-control is to have mastery over oneself especially sensual desires. I always explain to people that there is a 'self' that always want to loose control in every one of us which must be tamed. There is no human on earth without tendencies for excesses. It could be in the area of appetite, sex, anger, speech, sleep, recreation, and ambitions. Discipline is not a gift of the Spirit, it is something you cultivate.
God is expecting us to add the ingredient of self-control to our faith in Jesus. He won't do this for us. Lack of self-control can pull a man down from a lofty height. I read the story of a football team that went to the world cup. They got to the second round. The night before their second round match, most of them had sex with ladies who weren't their wives. When they got to the field the next day, they played like weaklings and they lost the match.
Proverbs 25:28 said, "A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls" NLT. Ancient cities had protective walls that prevented invaders from coming in. Once that wall is broken, they become vulnerable to the enemy's attack. Look at areas of your life where you lack self control and start working on it. Pray about it, be accountable to someone and be disciplined. The divine nature of God in you is the advantage you have above those excesses.
Father, I receive the grace to exercise self-control in all things in Jesus name.
