ADD VIRTUE TO FAITH
The opening verse of 2 Peter chapter 1says: "Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ". Peter was addressing those that put their faith in Jesus and have received the gift of righteousness. In verse 3-4, he stated that God's divine power hath given us all that pertains to life and godliness and that we are partakers of divine nature. That's a good thing to hear. Isn't it?
However, in verse 5 of that chapter, he started by saying: "And beside this...add to your faith(your believe in Jesus) virtue". It is another of way saying, "believing in Jesus is not the be all, you have an additional role to play. Add virtue to your faith in Christ Jesus". He did not say "let the Holy Spirit add virtue to your faith". It is obvious the responsibility is ours. Why did he commit the responsibility of "adding" to believers, why not angels or the Spirit? This is simply because God's divine power has given us everything that pertains to life and godliness. Also, we have the divine nature in us.
What is virtue? That word is from the Greek "Arête". It means moral excellence. Now that you are saved, it is your responsibility to stand out morally. At this point, making every effort to attain moral excellence is no longer 'salvation by works' but you're living out your new life in Christ. Your new life is meant to produce good works( Eph2:10). Jesus said, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your GOOD WORKS , and glorify your Father which is in heaven". Matthew5:16. The light of your virtue must shine for all to see so that your father in heaven might be glorified.
Father, I receive the grace to add virtue to my faith in Christ, in Jesus name. Amen
