Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. At the age of 18, his right leg was amputated after he was diagnosed with Osteogenic Sarcoma. He saw the suffering of other cancer patients and he decided to embark on a race across Canada to raise money for cancer research and to provide for needy children. He prepared for 18 months and he started his race on April 12th, 1980. He collected money along the way as he ran.
He ran 42km a day through Canada's Atlantic provinces. On September 1st, after 143 days and over 5000km, he was forced to stop running because cancer had spread to his lungs. Terry passed away on June 28, 1981 at the age of 22. More than $400million has been raised worldwide for cancer research through the annual Terry Fox Run in Canada. After death, he is still impacting lives. Making impact has nothing to do with money nor position. It is a decision from the heart that has nothing to do with status, position, wealth or background.
The poor assume that they can only impact lives if they have money but such people change their minds when they become rich because it is either the money is not enough or their priorities change. Politicians pursue leadership positions telling us that they would change the world if only they can be voted for. In the part of the world where I come from, those promises end up not being fulfilled. Jesus did not pursue money to change lives neither did he vie for political office to change his world. Making a lasting impact entails finding your purpose and fulfilling it. It entails solving problems for humanity despite your condition. You can start from where you are.
Father, I receive the grace to abound in good works in Jesus name.
