When we call something a gift, it is different from a reward. Gifts are given as a sign of love and affection. The recipient of a gift need not do something special to merit it because gifts are given without considering merit. On the other hand, rewards are given based on merit. You can't get a reward except you work for it. God is offering a gift to mankind now and it is called the gift of eternal life. It is free. You cannot merit it by works.
The fall of man made it impossible for man to work his way to righteousness. Every attempt to be righteous through the arms of the flesh makes man to be more filthy before God. Jesus came to do the "dirty job" for mankind so that the gift can be available to man at no cost. All you need to do is to believe in Jesus. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life".John 3:16 KJV
The ball is in your court my dear friend. The only thing you need to do is to believe in Jesus. Believe that his death, burial and resurrection is sufficient to save you from your sins and deliver you from the consequences. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:17-18 KJV

Father, I believe in Jesus and what he did for me on the cross. Jesus, wash my sins and write my name in the book of life. I confess you as my Lord and personal saviour. Accept me, In Jesus name.
