Dr. David Livingstone (1813-1873) was born into a very poor family. He self-sponsored himself to school till he became a medical doctor. He came to Africa as a medical missionary. He was one of those that championed the anti-slavery movement.
He believed that he was not called to preaching as much as he was called to finding routes and resources for trade that would displace the profit in slave trading and worked tirelessly towards this end.
He was loved by many and respected by the tribes with whom he had contact. To him, missions was not limited to preaching but he used his skill (medical and leadership) to do the will of God.
There's a great lesson to learn in the life of Dr. David. He used his skill and profession as a platform for spreading the gospel and service to humanity.We need more men like David Livingstone today.
The population of unreached peoples all over the world is over a billion. In most umteached areas, entering as a career missionary may not be so easy but the doors are always open for professionals to do their thing.
Even in some countries with anti Christian laws, they allow foreign students to study in their universities. What If all Christians all over the word traveling to those countries for further studies or business see themselves as missionaries sent by God?
Sometime ago, when there was a very high influx of Nigerians to Europe, I knew that open door was God's strategy of sending missionaries there. Unfortunately, some saw it as an economic escape valve instead of an opportunity for ministry.
Your profession is a platform for missions. Certain doors may not open to career missionaries but most professionals will be given access. You must be a mobile missionary wherever you find yourself. As a school teacher, you can influence thousands of pupils and students for Christ without restriction.
There's no useless person in God's end time mission agenda. You have a skill you can use to reach the lost. You are equipped by God to do His will and you have what it takes to do it.
It is my desire that all Christians will see their career, business and skill as a platform for ministry. Once you imbibe this ideology, the secular becomes relevant for spiritual.
