LOVE IS A LIVING THING- FEED IT
Telling you love is a living thing that requires feeding is probably one of the funniest thing you might be hearing from me. Isn't it?
I heard same from a marriage counselor, Pastor Mrs Oshofowora and her explanation made much sense to me. The reality of the truth she shared dawned on me.
Imagine having a child that is malnourished and starved. The outlook, strength and health is predictable- horrible. Everyone is as healthy as what they eat. In these days of heightened nutritional awareness, we now know the importance of proper diet.
Same applies in marriage. Figuratively, love is a living thing. It can grow, flourish and be healthy If properly fed. On the other hand, love can be weak, poor, unhealthy and eventually die when starved.
True marital wisdom is knowing the right love diet of your spouse and feeding him/her the love diet. That's all. Your love diet may be different from that of your spouse. Couples in marriage must know what to feed their love for their marriage to remain healthy.
You don't love your spouse the way you think he/she should be loved. You love based on how your spouse want to be loved. The onus of discovery lies on you both.
This truth is what Gary Chapman taught in his famous book: Five Love Languages. Though, I believe love languages could be more than five because of individual differences and unique preferences.
You see, this truth and others i've taught so far is the secret behind marriages that are working. A flourishing marriage is worked out systematically not wished. It requires feeding love with the appropriate diet for it to remain strong.
Principles and wisdom makes marriage work not miracles. If miracles make marriages work, prayer warriors will have the best marriages in the world because they'll pray down miracles. There won't be divorce and separation among believers. Unfortunately, marriages don't work like this.
The love between couples cannot flourish beyond what they feed it. You cannot get from your marriage what you have not invested into it. Simple!
