Psalm 103:1-2 Bless the Lord , O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord , O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
In 1860, a ship went aground on the shore of Lake Michigan near Evanston, and Edward Spencer waded again and again into the frigid waters to rescue 17 passengers. He was a ministerial student in Evanston, Illinois, who was part of a life-saving squad.
In the process, his health was permanently damaged. Some years later at his funeral, it was noted that not one of the people he rescued ever thanked him according to Warren Wiersby.
Most times, we suffer a self-induced amnesia about God's goodness in our lives. We forget God's interventions and miracles easily. Often, we only remember these things when they're fresh in our memories but with time, it fades.
The Psalmist said, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits", Psalm102:2. The Psalmist didn't say we should forget some benefits and thank him for the seemingly big ones but he said we should not forget ALL his benefits no matter how insignificant they are.
I heard the story of a woman who frequently thanked God in church for stooling with ease. The Pastor became tired of her frequent thanksgiving. Later, he developed a health challenge that made it difficult for him to pass stool. It was during that experience he appreciated God for the woman's testimonies.
Every day, we should learn to count our blessings no matter how little they are and give thanks. Though there are no 'little' blessings but what you call little blessings are great blessings when summed up."
Do not take for granted the little interventions of God in your life. That headache you call ordinary has killed many people. If you have ever fought the battle for survival and won, you'll appreciate God for life each passing day.
If only you know what it takes to go out and return, you'll never take such a miracle for granted especially If your outing has ever been threatened. While still waiting for that "big" miracle, you have every reason to be thankful. Forget not all his benefits ( past&present).
CONFESSION: Father, I thank you for all you've done for me.
