THE FUTILITY OF UNCERTAIN RICHES

*Proverbs 23:5 Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle*. NIV

My dad told a story about a wealthy woman whose son died. She spent so much to save the life of her son through medical intervention, eventually, he died. She got on the streets in anguish shouting "Oju ti owo" meaning, money has been disgraced.

Judging from her outburst, it is probable that she trusted in the power of money to restore the boy's health instead of trusting God's healing power. Money can be disgraced and made useless in the hands of those that trust money. Money can fail woefully.

I have seen men and women who were once wealthy but lost it all due to sickness, death, fraud or loss. In fact, seeing the decline in the  wealth of an erstwhile industrialist and politician who once boasted that devourer cannot devour his wealth, I concluded that the richest man in the world can turn to a pauper in minutes.

The bible says wealth&riches is "uncertain"( 1Tim 6:17). In fact, the opening text made it clear that money can sprout wings and can fly off like an eagle. That is why it is uncertain. Haven't you seen people who sold all their properties to treat just one sickness and despite all, they died?

The trap wealth&riches sets for us is that it tries to divert our trust in God to itself.

It is a dangerous thing when your confidence and mine is in wealth instead of putting our trust in God. We become bold and audacious when our pocket is filled with cash instead becoming bold&audacious because we know God. Some don't pray when there is money in their account, they see it as disturbing God.

They forget that praying to God is the highest expression of our trust in God. I teach this principle to my children. Sometimes, when they ask for things I can easily buy without much stress on my finances, i'll tell them to go and pray not  because I don't have the money but I want to teach them how to trust in my source- God.

There is a street slogan here in Nigeria that says, "Money stops nonsense. What money cannot do, more money will do it". This is the language of the ungodly and those whose life revolves around money and riches of this world.

Wealth in the hands of a man that is struggling with the flesh will make him highminded and foolish like the rich fool in the bible.

I see you are striving to get wealth through crooked means because you are already seeing it as the greatest form of security. The surest form of security is in God because he is certain but the wealth of this world is uncertain.

Listen to this Pauline counsel in 1 Timothy 6:17: "Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in UNCERTAIN RICHES, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;"( KJV).

Action Point:

In whom did you put your trust, God or money? Money can fail and be disgraced but those who put their trust in God shall be like Mount Zion which cannot be shaken.
