HEAVEN HELP THOSE WHO CANNOT HELP THEMSELVES

Psalms 60:11 *Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man*

I grew up hearing "Heaven help those who help themselves". This concept is rooted in various cultures and belief systems. The ancient Greek philosopher Aesop is credited with a similar saying, "the gods help them that help themselves".

Some have taken it far by saying the bible says, "Heaven help those who help themsleves". I am yet to find a place in the bible where this statement can be found. It is not there. In some cases or situation, some have used the statement to support unholy compromises.

Originally,  the concept is trying to preach self reliance and hardwork, yet you must understand that access to God's help is simply for the helpless. Those who can help themselves need no help from God. We are not created to be independent but to be dependent on God.

Hard work is good. It is normal to add some effort but all these are not enough to stay on top in a fallen world. I have seen hardworking men fail in life. Men of skill and wisdom have ended in frustration.

Ecclesiastes 9:11 says, "I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all".

Everyone of us needs help from the divine. Worldly people seek supernatural help from demons. I laugh when some believers speak as though unbelievers are making it without some form of help. As a preacher, I can tell you boldly that those you see who appear as though they do not subscribe to any form of worship have secret altars where they bow. Thr world is spiritual but most of us don't know.

Those of us serving the living God should not sit back and look on. We need something beyond human effort, skill and wisdom. It is called the help of God.

God want us to rely on him totally. The psalmist says, "Those who trust in the Lord are as secure as Mount Zion; they will not be defeated but will endure forever"( Psalms 125:1 NLT).

One of the ways you can secure God's help is to ask for it in prayers. Before getting to your wits end, start asking for his help.

Action Point:

Father, help me.
