Isaiah 6:8 "Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!".
While growing up as young believers, we heard there was a meeting in heaven where God decided to call for volunteers who will go to the world to die for the sins of mankind. As we were told, God called on several angels but they rejected the assignment citing several reasons.
Later, Jesus volunteered by saying, "Here am I. Send me". According to the narrators, Jesus came to the world after every other person in heaven rejected the assignment to save the world. Did you hear this story while growing?
Severally, I have read my bible from Genesis to Revelation, yet I can't find this story there. The question "Whom shall I send" and the response that came after; the scenario was not a meeting between God and angels. Isaiah was the one who heard the Lord asking that question and he volunteered to go.
Also, the story misrepresent and undermines the salvific plan of God for mankind making it look like an after thought. God need not consult anyone about our salvation because the bible says Christ was slain before the foundation of the world(Revelation 13:8). Christ's death was in God's grand plan even before creating the world. Why will God hold a meeting on your salvation and mine?
To even say angels rejected or refused God's call is another error. The truth is that If God assigns angels to work, they must obey. They have no power to reject his bidding. The psalmist(103:20) says, "Praise the LORD, YOU ANGELS, you mighty ones WHO CARRY OUT HIS PLANS, LISTENING FOR EACH OF HIS COMMANDS".
In christianity, there is no place for myths, fables and legends. Those things undermines and deviates from the core spiritual truths inherent in scriptures. In fact, I see it as a sin because it is adding to scriptures what is not there.
Revelation 22:18 says, "I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll".
When people are raised with myths, legends and fables from within the church, their understanding about God and the bible will be distorted. They will be weak and stunted in growth. Our faith doesn't give room for unfounded stories. It is against orthodoxy.
The purveyors of myths, legends&fables on the pulpit have a very high tendency to lead people into heresies& errors of mysticism, spiritism and anti biblical practices. Don't be comfortable with teachings and practices that cannot be substantiated in the holy scriptures.
Just like the reformers, your mantra should be "Sola scriptura".
