While growing up with my parents, I saw first hand what it means to be consecrated unto the Lord. They were my prime examples. Every morning, my daddy will be awake around 4am in the morning to pray before the general family devotion by 6am. That is his personal consecration till date.
Same applies to my mum. Hers is sometimes earlier than 4am. I saw both of them praying together as couples, sometimes twice or more in a day. My dad is a septuagenarian and he still maintains that routine. He reads bible daily He is very consistent in his walk with the Lord.
During my first dregree convocation when my parents were about leaving the convocation venue, they prayed in the car with others who came with them. One of my room mates saw them. After they left, he said, "Lanre, in over 20 years of living with my parents, I have not seen them pray together" (paraphrase).
Your children may struggle to develop a personal consecration If you don't model it to them.
We complain that this generation of young men are not praying, fasting nor studying their bible but they love sensationalism and what suits their emotions. If we check very well, they do not have a model of Christian consecration while growing up, so why should we expect from them what they have not seen?
Spiritual things can be caught easily when you stay in an atmosphere where it is done. It is easy to teach but not easy to practice. That is why parents must balance teaching and instruction with living it out for the children to see how it is done.
As a parent, your christian consecration should not be hidden. Let your children know when you are praying and studying your bible. When they see it is your life style, you are sowing a seed into their lives. Tell them the importance of your daily spiritual routines.
As they grow, engage them in your personal consecration. Instruct them to pray on their own for a few minutes like you do and get them to study their bible and write a report of what they studied. My mum did that for us and she marked our bible meditations like a school teacher will mark notes.
I have been writing this daily devotional your reading for over 10 years. It is very easy for me to write a daily devotional for 365 days because I was trained to do it from my boyhood days. While some say it is a grace or gift which I agree, it is also a product/result someone's intentionality to make me know scriptures and teach it to others.
Model Christian consecration of a sound prayer life, bible study, church attendance, engagement in kingdom service, evangelism and missions to your children. They may not catch it immediately but the seed will be planted and will germinate someday in their lives.
