PROFITABILITY OF ALL SCRIPTURES

2 Timothy 3:16 *All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: [17] that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works*.

PROFITABLE FOR REPROOF

Another function of scripture is reproof. That word is not so explicit in King James version. Let's look at the same scripture in New Living Translation.

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives( Reproof). It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right ( Emphasis mine).

From the version above, to reproof is to come to the realization of what is wrong in our lives. The inspired word of God is designed by God to reveal our wrongs to us.

This is one of the reasons selective study or teaching of the bible is not helpful. There are rebukes against wrong in scriptures. When we come across those scriptures, let us accept them and make proper adjustment.

Some preachers have a culture of avoiding reproof in their preachings and teachings because they don't want to offend anyone. Some even think such preaching or teaching is against the culture of the new testament, often referring to Pauline teachings.

That view is just myopic. Read Paul, "for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are JEALOUS of one another and QUARREL with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world"?(1 Cor 3:3). Did you read the bolded words?

A large portion of 1 Corinthians written by Paul was to rebuke and point the errors of the Corinthian church and correct them. In fact, in 1 Corinthians 15:34, he says, "Think carefully about what is right, and STOP SINNING. For to your shame I say that some of you don’t know God at all" (1 Cor 15:34)

Jesus rebuked the seven churches in Asia minor (Revelations 2&3). These were new testament churches filled with men and women who were saved by grace.  He pointed out their wrongs and even threatened to remove their lamps.

Stop giving what is wrong another name. Fornication is not fun, it is sin. If God is pointing our errors in scriptures and  not pampering sin, why should we?

Action Point:

When the word performs the function of reproof in your life, accept it with good heart.
