Speaking about king Joash in 2 Kings 12:2, the bible says that he was pleasing in the Lord's sight because Jehoiada the priest instructed him. That is, the things he did that made God to be happy with him were as a result of taking instructions from the priest.
One of the benefits of staying under godly leadership is to receive instruction on how to please God. When you read or hear the word of God preached or taught, often, there is a command or instruction to obey inherent in that message.
Paul says, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, FOR INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUSNESS:"( 2 Timothy 3:16 KJV)
The instructions we receive from scriptures, when we read it or hear it through preaching or teaching must produce right living. Some instructions are producing greed, ungodliness, lasciviousness and all manners of things that displeases God. Some believe a new testament believer does not need to be instructed since he has the Holy Spirit.
While it is true that a believer have the Holy Spirit to guide and instruct, yet, the bible never said he (the believer) won't need instruction from teachers on righteousness. In fact, Paul, the preacher of grace enjoined instructing believers.
In 1 Timothy 4:6, speaking to Timothy, Paul says, "IF YOU GIVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE BELIEVERS, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, as you feed yourself spiritually on the words of faith and of the true teaching which you have followed".
One reason for being under a bible believing church is to receive godly instructions. On your own, you may not instruct yourself properly. We are not always sensitive to the Holy Spirit on some issues. That's why God uses human agent to communicate with us.
You need a pastor who will teach and instruct you in righteousness. I am not talking about an online pastor here but a real time pastor who can watch over your life like Jehoiada did to Joash. Someone who cab hold you accountable.
Who is instructing you in righteousness? Do you belong to a spiritual family where the leader takes giving of godly instruction serious or just a place where you feel good after hearing each sermon that leaves you without a sense of responsibility?
