Luke 10:38-39 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. KJV
The story of Mary and Martha has alot of lessons for us whom the end of the age has come. When Jesus visited, Mary sat at the feet of Jesus learning. She paid attention to the things Jesus taught but Martha was encumbered with other things that doesn't really matter. Jesus said: "...Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her", Luke 10:41-42.
Several times, I've had some persons tell me they don't understand the bible when they read. Some read the bible as a daily tradition but they are not profiting from their study. Most times, Martha syndrome is their problem. Martha paid attention to the things that weren't needful, she was full of activities but not productive spiritually. There are brethren who are active in other seemingly spiritual things but not making progress in their walk with God. Activity is not the same as productivity. Mary sat at the feet of Jesus to learn and it paid off for her.
The key to overcoming Martha syndrome is to obey the injunction in the book of Proverbs 4:20-21: "My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart". Leave activities and pay attention to God's word. Don't be in a hurry to exit the place of study and prayer. While in church, bring your mind to focus on what the preacher is saying and make notes. If you do these, this is what will happen: "For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh", Proverbs 4:22 KJV.
Father, I receive the grace to pay attention to God's word and to learn at the feet of Jesus. I overcome Martha syndrome in Jesus name.
