Something happened on the day of pentecost after the upper room experience. Peter, the man who denied Jesus before his crucifixion and went fishing after Christ's resurrection preached on the day of pentecost and three thousand souls were added to the church. This was a man we can call shy and timid bringing into the kingdom a massive harvest of souls. How did that happen? Baptism with the Spirit of course.
The power received at baptism with the Spirit is the power for effective evangelism and missions. It is a misnomer to be baptized with the Spirit and lack passion for souls.
In Acts 1:8, Jesus says, "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth".
Speaking in other tongues is not all there is to this baptism. It is only an initial evidence not the only evidence. There are many tongue speakers today who are not witnessing Christ to sinners. They vibrate in our meetings but are not talking about Jesus to lost souls. Something is not right about that. Of what use is power that is not effectively deployed to winning souls?
Don't stop at the upper room. Come outside and preach the gospel to sinners. They are waiting for you. Stop dragging the pulpit with your pastor. There is a ready-made pulpit out there on the streets where sinners are. The early church understood this and they went from house to house preaching the gospel displaying the power of God to sinners. Little wonder why they covered everywhere in their time. They took the gospel beyond their cultural and geographical boundaries to the unreached in their day.
