Luke9:49 “Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”
Many years ago, I heard the story of someone that wanted to accept a job but was inquisitive to know if his prospective employer belonged to his/her denomination. It sounded awkward to the man because all he wanted was to help someone out of unemployment. A woman also told me that a Pastor won't employ anyone that doesn't belong to his denomination. In my campus days, I saw churches that didn't fellowship with other believers because it was prohibited in their denomination. Some do not marry from other denominations. If you do, you may not be ordained a Pastor. These and many more are the realities of our day.
Something tells me that the disciples of Christ at one point in their lives had a 'click' mentality about being with Christ. They saw someone casting out demons in the name of Jesus and they became angry. They even tried to stop him. Why? Because he doesn't belong to their click. Jesus was appalled at their ignorance about the kingdom and he told them that whoever wasn't against them is for them. That's deep. That's another way of saying, 'as long as what he is doing agrees with your belief-system, you're one'. There are no two Christ, just one. As long as we hold on to the fundamentals of the faith, we are one. It is as simple as that regardless of the names our churches bear. The spirit of denominationalism is a demon sent from hell to weaken the body of Christ. A situation where you think only your church is perfect and others are wrong, you're off the track already.
That doesn't mean everyone sees everything in the Bible the same way but if there's a common ground about our salvation through Christ, that's what matters. Dogma's have made things complex, but that's not in agreement with the Spirit of Christ. Some churches are teaching people to be loyal to their dogmas more than Christ. Those churches have become a click of some sort. That's not biblical. I grew up hearing that the only genuine church are Pentecostals and that others are worldly but now I've changed that view. God has opened doors of ministry for me in several places and I can see God's children everywhere even in the least expected churches. Christ is not coming to rapture a denomination but the church that is without spot or wrinkles. That church is not in the building but the redeemed individuals. When you meet people from different denominations out there, see Jesus in them not the institution they represent. Your brother in Christ is not only that brother that sit beside you always in church. That saved and sanctified brother down the street and in your office who attends 'XYZ'church is also you brother.
