For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."_ — _John 1:17_
WHAT GRACE IS NOT — IT IS NOT A LICENSE TO SIN (a)
A man was pardoned from death row by the governor. On his way out, the governor told him, "I have not just forgiven your crime, I have given you a new identity. Here is a job, a house, and my name."
If that man goes back the next day to rob the same bank, claiming "I have the governor's pardon," was he ever truly transformed by the pardon? No. He only used the pardon as a cover for his old life.
Many treat grace like that — using the pardon of God to continue the crime that killed Jesus.
True grace does not say, "Sin doesn't matter." True grace says, "Sin mattered so much that it took the blood of Jesus to deal with it, now you are free not to return to it.
One of the most misunderstood realities in the Bible is Grace. Because grace is so powerful, so free, and so contrary to our human system of earning, it has been stretched by some into something God never intended. This distortion is what many call "Hyper-Grace", the idea that since we are under grace, how we live no longer matters.
One proponent once said, "A believer can live as a practicing homosexual and still be saved." I quietly asked — then what was he saved _from_? If salvation does not save us _from_ sin, but only _in_ sin, then it has lost its transformative power. That is not grace. That is deception.
Paul anticipated this abuse and confronted it head-on:
> _"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?"_ — _Romans 6:1-2_
Grace does not give you permission to sin. Grace gives you power over sin.
Think of it this way: The Law was like a signboard that said "Do Not Enter The Mud." It told you what was wrong but gave you no power to stay out. Grace is not a signboard that now says "You Can Enter The Mud, We Will Clean You." Grace is the hand that lifts you out of the mud and then teaches your feet to walk on a clean path.
That is what Paul means in Titus:
> _"For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world."_ — _Titus 2:11-12_
Notice — grace _teaches_. True grace is a teacher. It does not pamper your lusts; it schools your heart. It makes you love what God loves and hate what God hates.
Has your understanding of grace made you more careful about sin, or more careless?
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your grace that saved me. Teach me by that same grace to deny ungodliness and walk worthy of You today. Amen.
