PARENTEENS - Part 2

_Proverbs 22:6_ - _"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."
The most common complaint of teenagers is: "My parents don't listen." The number one complaint of parents is: "My teenager doesn't talk." Both are true because we have built walls instead of bridges.
The teenager wants to be heard and understood within the context of his own world, while the parent interprets everything from an adult's world. So even when teenagers are talking, their parents don't grasp the framework of what they are saying. They don't understand where they are coming from.
If your only communication with your teenager is correction: "You are always on your phone," "You are lazy," "You will not amount to anything" , he will stop talking to you. He will find someone outside who listens without judging, and that is dangerous.
> _James 1:19_ - _"Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath."_
To bridge this communication gap, you must learn to listen to understand, not to reply. You do this by creating a safe space for uninterrupted communication. Don't judge immediately.
They need a listening ear, not a judge or a lecturer. Sometimes they don't need a sermon, they just need someone to listen. Jesus asked questions; He didn't just give answers.
Enter their world. Ask about their favorite music, their game, their crush with genuine interest and then bring a Bible-based perspective into that conversation.
> _"A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!"_ - _Proverbs 15:23_
Your teenager will tell you secrets if he knows you won't explode. If you always act surprised or like you've failed as a parent when they share their secrets, they will shut down.
Create an atmosphere where they can tell you anything without restraint, and develop the wisdom to give godly counsel where they need alignment with kingdom values.
Action point
_Father, help me to be swift to hear and slow to speak with my teenager. Give me wisdom to build a bridge, not a wall, and to guide with love. Amen._
