1 Corinthians 10:14 Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.
A Christian woman had a challenge. One of her children was going through a serious challenge.
Another Christian woman who knew about the whole thing advised that she engage in marathon fasting and prayer for seven days. That's fine.
However, she advised that during the fasting, she should wear the same cloth throughout the seven days after which she would burn the cloth. When she heard this, she rejected the idea because it looked like performing a ritual.
Some actions aren't ordinary, they are backed by demons. If she had burnt that cloth, who knows the demon behind that action? There are several ways people sacrifice to demons.
People sacrifice to demons not only by carrying a calabash to the junction, some "prophetic work" people do after prayers are purely demonic. They have occultic undertones.
Some extra biblical practices have their roots in idolatry, mysticism and occult. That a preacher asked you to do something or to engage in prophetic works doesn't mean it has God's backing.
Often, the deception is that "Afterall, we called the name of Jesus Christ during the work, we didn't go to shrine". Well, they fail to realize that mixing the name of Jesus with other things doesn't validate it.
The sons of sceva also mentioned the name of Jesus that Paul preached yet they were dealt with by demons.
Someone once claimed to have a word for me. He said he saw me flying around the world preaching the Gospel. That I know already, for me, that's a reminder of God's promises to me.
However, he said I needed to do some works. He told me to get a new sponge and bath with it at a certain time of the night then throw it away. How is that different from what "Babalawo"( occultic priest) tell people to do?
Some persons cite old testament examples of works like the use of salt by Elisha when praying for a city, some also cite Naaman bathing in the river and other examples.
But I ask if they can point to any example of such in the epistles or Acts of Apostles? What they fail to realize is that the dispensation where God permitted those things is different from ours.
Under that dispensation, Christ hasn't been exalted and given a name that is above all names or works. The Apostles in the early church didn't bother telling people to bath in river, they simply placed a demand on the name of Jesus and they got result.
That a practice is done inside what we call church doesn't validate it. Church folks also idolize items that are symbolic in the bible, oil, water and mantle.
Some persons have anointing oil for different purposes with labels on the bottle. They have one for vengeance, breakthrough, favour, etc. Forgetting that it is not the oil that performs the miracle. The oil is only a symbol of the Holy Spirit not the Holy Spirit itself.
Our generation is also repeating the same mistake the Israelites made. They idolized the brass serpent(Nehustan) Moses lifted in the wilderness(Numbers 21:6-9), it became a god they worshipped long after he died.
That serpent was only symbolic of the crucified Christ. It was a foreshadow of what we should be doing in this dispensation- looking unto Jesus Christ. They focused on the serpent and idolized it. Thank God Hezekiah was wise enough to remove it, 2Kings 18:4.
We're still doing same in this generation. What God instructed to be done one time has become a continuous idolatrous practice instead of looking unto Jesus.
I can't imagine Peter, Paul and other apostles recommending people to do strange things because of miracles. The name of Jesus Christ is sufficient.
Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:9-11 NLT).
Whatever the name of Jesus Christ can't do should remain undone. The moment we begin to add something else to the name of Jesus, we may be slipping into worship of demons. Those who engage in such never cease to experience sorrow.
Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more. I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods or take up their names on my lips ( Psalms 16:4).
The name of Jesus is enough. The finished work of Christ on the cross is the end of all other "works" there is. That's the most superior work that I know.
The power of the finished work resides in the name of Jesus. That's why all other works aren't as potent as the name of Jesus Christ.
Dear children, keep yourselves from idols (1 John 5:21).
CONFESSION: The finished work of Christ is enough for me. I need no other work because of the superiority of Christ's work on the cross. As I call his name, solution is assured.
