Matthew24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
When describing an object that is hot, one may say, "the object is red-hot". On the other hand, when an object is cold, it may be described as stone cold. The two expressions describes the temperature of an object. When Jesus spoke about the happenings of the end time, he said, "And because iniquity shall abound, the love(Agape) of many shall wax cold." There's a possibility for the spiritual temperature of a believer who was once described as 'red-hot' to become 'stone cold.' If it is impossible, Jesus wouldn't have made the statement he made in the opening text.
His statement as at that time was futuristic. We are living in that future he prophesied over 2000 years ago. These are days where the spiritual heat of believers is under attack. The only reason why the love of many shall wax cold is because of iniquity. When the devil wants to turn down the spiritual heat of a believer, he doesn't come with what you'll call 'big sins' like fornication, stealing,etc. He is subtle with his attack. His approach is gradual and he uses things that may seem harmless and inconsequential. He may start with an attack on your prayer life and gradually make you lose passion for personal bible study. In this state of gradual decline, it may be hard to decipher that something is going wrong with your spiritual life.
There are cold men preaching cold messages to cold people. That a preacher is vibrating and shouting on the altar is not an evidence of being red-hot. A soft spoken,cool and calm preacher may be red hot. It is not about charisma. Church attendance is not a true measure of spiritual heat. Some are traditional church attendees yet, they are stone cold. How is your private prayer life and word study? Are you indulging the flesh in secret? What about the state of your heart? Are you still burning for the Lord like before? Remember the days you were on campus, preaching from class to class. What about those days when you fasted on your own without supervision? Listen to Jesus: "Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place." (Revelation 2:5 NIV)
